PURPOSE: To obtain an optical element which improves thermal stability at the time of molding and is favorable in optical transmission, by a method wherein resin composed of a polymer part mainly composed of an aromatic vinyl monomer unit and a stabilized polyphenylene ether part is melted and molded.
CONSTITUTION: Optical elements such as an optical disk base, optical card and lens are manufactured by melting and molding a resin composition composed of a polymer part mainly composed of an aromatic vinyl monomer unit such as styrene and a polyphenylene ether part to which stabilization treatment has been applied. Stabilization of the polyphenylene ether is performed by either capping a hydroxyl group of the end with an acylation agent or performing refining treatment with α pynene. As the same is superior in thermal stability, an optical element which is free from deterioration due to high-temperature heat history at the time of molding and is low in properties of birefringence is obtained.
