Abstract:

PURPOSE: To manufacture the optical fiber type optical branching and coupling device of invariably constant quality whose branching ratio has small wavelength dependency efficiently and stably at high yield without depending upon the skillfulness of an operator.
CONSTITUTION: When both optical fibers f1 and f2 are spliced by fusion and drawn, monitor light having specific wavelength is made incident on the input side of the optical fiber f2 from a light source 100, and the output-side light output of at least one optical fiber is detected by a detecting means 104 and converted into an electric signal. Light which is used for the manufactured optical branching and coupling device, namely, has 1.65μm wavelength longer than 1.30-1.55μm is used as the monitor light. When it is observed that a peak C is reached while the variation curve of the branching ratio of the monitor light with 1.65μm wavelength is monitored, a drawing operation stop signal is sent out at the point of time when the branching ratio decreases by &utri P, i.e., 2% and after a heating device for fusion drawing is retracted, the rack- pinion mechanism of a fusion drawing table 102 is stopped.
