PURPOSE: To manufacture photoconductive cadmium sulfide with high crystallinity, uniform particle shape and uniform particle size by calcining cadmium sulfide mixed with a specified amount of a flux at a specified temp., adding a copper compound, and carrying out recalcination.
CONSTITUTION: Cadmium sulfide is mixed with ≥20, preferably 30W50wt% flux. The flux is a compound used to diffuse an activator in CdS, e.g., CdCl2, ZnCl2, KCl, NACl, NH4Cl or CdSO4. Several kinds of such compounds may be mixed in a suitable ratio and used as the flux. The mixture is calcined at a temp. ≥50°C above the m.p. of the flux, and after adding a copper compound, recalcination is carried out. Copper chloride, sulfide, sulfate or the like is used as the copper compound, and the especially preferred compound is copper chloride or sulfate. The amount of the used copper compoud is ≤ about 1×10-3, preferably about 5×10-5W5×10-4mol/1mol CdS.
