PURPOSE: To provide a polymer excellent in heat resistance and toughness, satisfactorily fluidized in treatment, and suitable as a binder for coating material by reacting an organic diisocyanate with an imidocarboxylic acid and a diimido- dicarboxylic acid.
CONSTITUTION: An organic diisocyanate (suitably, 4,4'- and 2,4'-diisocyanate diphenylmethane or the like) is reacted with 95-5 mole % of an imidocarboxylic acid of formula I (R is H or 1-6C alkyl; (x) is 1-12) and 5-95 mole % of a diimido-dicarboxylic acid of formula II (R1 is aliphatic group, aromatic group or the like) at 50-400°C, preferably, 70-350°C, as needed, under the presence of a solvent and a catalyst to provide the objective polymer. As the compound of the formula I, trimellitic imido caproic acid is preferred. As the compound of the formula II is obtained, for example, by condensing diamine with trimellitic acid anhydride.
