Title:
MANUFACTURE OF SAMARIUM METAL OR SAMARIUM ALLOY
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH05295582
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To efficiently manufacture the objective Sm metal or Sm alloy by executing molten salt electrolytic reduction using Sm2O3 as a raw material in an electrolytic bath essentially consisting of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals and SmFe2. CONSTITUTION:Molten salt electrolytic reduction using SmO3 as a raw material is executed in an electrolytic bath essentially consisting of at least one kind among the fluorides of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals and samarium fluoride. At the time of manufacturing the objective Sm metal or Sm alloy in this way, as the samarium fluoride, SmF2 is used. Furthermore, by regulating the temp. of the electrolytic bath to the solidus curve temp. to 1000 deg.C, the Sm metal is precipitated on the cathode of carbon or the like, which is dropped and recovered. At this time, by using Fe, Co, Ni or the like as the cathode, the Sm alloy with those can be obtd. Moreover, the electrolytic voltage can be regulated to a low one of 3.5 to 10V, thus, the electrolytic consumption of SmF2 in the electrolytic bath can be suppressed. Furthermore, an Sm alloy reservoir can be made of W or Ta hardly soluble in water and an electrolytic cell container can be made of economical iron.
