Abstract:
A homogeneous mixt is prepd. from (i) 30-70 (40-70) pts wt. ethylene-or propylene polymers, consisting of >=80 wt. % polymerised C2H4- or C3H6 units and (ii) 30-70 (30-60) pts. wt styrene polymer, consisting of 90 wt.% polymerised styrene units, provided wt pt sum (i) + (ii) = 100. Mixt. is extruded at 100-300 (120-250) degrees C and outlet velocity 10-300 (20-100) m/min to form flat shaped articles having thickness 0.1-10 mm and cross-sectional area 1-5000(10-500) mm2. Flat-shaped article is longitudinally stretched in ratio 1:2 to 1:40 (1:10 to 1:30) under cooling to 60-150 (90-120) degrees C. Stretched article is cut cross-sectionally into pieces having length 1-5 (2:4) cm. Pieces are broken down to fibres by standard methods, opt in wet or dry devices, e.g in pulp engines. Short fibres obtd. opt mixed with cellulose fibres, are used for paper and cardboard mfr.
