Abstract:
Stable emulsions of 25 per cent by weight of water or a mixture of water and C1-C4-alcohol in diesel oil are prepared using an emulsifier or a mixture of emulsifiers which are polyesters of saturated or unsaturated fatty acids having 8-22 carbon atoms in the molecule. The emulsifiers which are used in a quantity of 0.5-2 per cent by weight are preferably polyglycerol esters, sorbitan esters or diacetyltartaric acid esters of glycerol esters of the said fatty acids. The emulsions are stable for at least 6 months and, as compared with pure diesel oil used in engines, give a better fuel economy, less coke deposition and a lower content of CO and hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas.
