Abstract:
PURPOSE:To improve the impact resistance, heat distortion resistance and moldability and to reduce coloration during molding or by heat, by subjecting an alpha-alkyl-substituted aromatic vinyl monomer to emulsion polymerization with a vinyl cyanide monomer in the presence of a specific emulsifing agent. CONSTITUTION:An emulsifying agent is obtained by mixing a compound of formula I [wherein R is an 8-32C divalent (un)saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group; and M is Na or K] with a compound of formula II (wherein R<1> is 10-14C alkyl, alkylene or alkyl-substituted phenyl; and X is carboxyl, sulfone or sulfate) in such amounts that the weight ratio is 1/9-9/1. Then, 50-90wt.% alpha-alkyl- substituted aromatic vinyl monomer (e.g. alpha-methylstyrene) is subjected to emulsion polymerization with 50-10wt.% vinyl cyanide monomer (e.g. acrylonitrile) in the presence of 0.1-5pts.wt. above emulsifying agent for 100pts.wt. total monomers, polymerization initiator, polymerization promotor, and the like at 30-80 deg.C.
