Title:
MANUFACTURE OF TITANIUM, ZIRCONIUM, AND ALLOYS THEREOF
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS63219537
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain Ti or Zr minimal in pollution by O, C, and N, by melting and holding an alloy of Zn and Ti or Zr in a crucible composed principally of fluorides of alkaline-earth metals or rare-earth elements, etc., and by distilling the above molten alloy in vacuum.

CONSTITUTION: A crucible prepared by subjecting a raw material composed principally of fluorides of alkaline-earth metals belonging to group IIa of the periodic table or rare-earth elements belonging to the group IIIa or oxyborides of group IIIa elements to compacting and sintering is used. An alloy of Zn and Ti or Zr is placed in the above crucible, melted under vacuum by means of a resistance heating furnace, etc., and distilled slowly so that bumping of Zn does not occur so as to be formed into Ti or Zr. By melting a Ti or Zr alloy having a melting point lower than that of crucible material by using, if necessary, the above-mentioned crucible in vacuum or in an inert-gas atmosphere, the Ti or Zr alloy can be manufactured.
