PURPOSE: Pretreated fibers made from acrylic fibers are soaked with phosphorus and heat treated under a specific tension in an inert gas atomsphere, thus manufacturing graphite fibers with high strength, high elasticity and excellent oxidation resistance.
CONSTITUTION: Pretreated fibers, which are made by oxidizing and carbonizing acrylonitrile fibers, are soaked with phosphorus to 0.001W0.1 wt% content and then graphitized by heating under a tension of 0.2W30 mg/d in an atmosphere of nitrogen or an inert gas to 1700W3500°C. A method of adding the phosphorus to the fibers is to soak the fibers into a solution or dispersion of a phosphorus compound such as phosphoric acid, or its ammonoium salt, alkali salt or alkaline earth salt, or a surface active agent containing phosphorus in water, or alcohol or acetone.
