To provide a method for manufacturing a copolymer of a cyclic olefin and a styrenic compound that is excellent in heat resistance and optical characteristics and high in the mechanical strength.
The method for manufacturing a copolymer of a cyclic olefin/a styrenic compound comprises copolymerizing a cyclic olefin and a styrenic compound in a halogen-based organic solvent in the co-presence of a transition metal compound of the group 4 of the periodic table. Preferably the transition metal compound of the group 4 of the periodic table is one represented by formula (1), wherein R1-R11 indicate a group selected from a hydrogen atom, a 1-10C alkyl group, an aryl group that may have a 1-10C alkyl group as a substituent and a silyl group that may have a 1-10C alkyl group as a substituent; X1 and X2 indicate a 1-10C alkyl group or a halogen atom; and M indicates a transition metal of the group 4 of the periodic table.
