To provide a manufacturing method for a cylinder device such as a hydraulic damper capable of eliminating the need for masking for a sliding part of a piston rod when coating is conducted.
A cap member 7 is installed at the tip of the piston rod 3 protruding from a cylinder part 2, and a lock member 12 is attached to the end of the cylinder part 2 and cut up upward to form an engagement part 13. The cap member 7 is cut up downward to form an engaging piece 14 and a window 15. Before attaching a dust cover 8, the piston rod 3 is shortened to around the minimum length position, and the cap member 7 is rotated for engagement of the engagement part 13 with the engaging piece 14, to lock the piston rod 3. This allows the cylinder part 2 to be coated in the condition that the piston rod 3 is shortened, which eliminates the need for masking the sliding part of the piston rod 3.
