To sufficiently enhance a low-temperature discharging property, a cycle life, and a high-rate discharging property in an alkaline storage battery wherein a hydrogen storage alloy electrode using hydrogen storage alloy powder is used for a negative electrode.
After hydrogen storage alloy powder containing nickel are surface-treated in an acidic solution containing carboxylic acid, they are treated with a solution containing a reducer. Then, by using the hydrogen storage alloy powder for electrodes wherein an atomic ratio of metallic nickel in all nickels existing on the surface layer is 50% or more and a complex of carboxylic acid and metal is formed on the surface, the hydrogen storage alloy electrode 2 is prepared, and this hydrogen storage alloy electrode 2 is used for the negative electrode of the alkaline storage battery.
