The manufacturing method for the specific norbornene based copolymer containing a monomer unit in which one methylene chain is introduced between a norbornene skeleton and an ester group is characterized in that polymerization is performed using a catalyst system comprising an anionic hydrocarbon, a main catalyst represented by [M(K)(L1)(L2)]n comprising a transition metal compound making a neutral ligand including an element of Group 15 of the periodic table and a negative electron-donative ligand as constitution elements, and a cocatalyst comprising an ionic compound capable of producing a cationic transition metal compound by reacting it with the main catalyst.
