Abstract:
To provide a method for manufacturing a retardation compensation element that has durability while suppressing a higher cost or elongation of a lead time and can improve contrast of a liquid crystal display device.SOLUTION: A retardation compensation element is manufactured in such a manner that: in a process of forming an optical anisotropy layer on a substrate, the optical anisotropy layer is constituted by a plurality of birefringent films; and in each birefringent film, when a vector is determined by the thickness of the film and an orientation of a line segment formed by projecting a film-forming direction of the film onto the surface of a transparent substrate, an orientation of a line segment formed by projecting a composite vector of vectors of the respective birefringent films onto the surface of the transparent substrate is almost the same as the orientation of a line segment formed by projecting a liquid crystal molecule constituting a liquid crystal cell onto the surface of the transparent substrate.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
