To provide a manufacturing method of terephthalic acid by a DMT hydrolysis reaction which permits particle size control of manufactured terephthalic acid and enhancement of properties of a slurry comprising terephthalic acid and an alkylene glycol.
The manufacturing method of terephthalic acid comprises feeding dimethyl terephthalate into one or at least two successive tank type reactors connected in series to cause hydrolysis at a high conversion rate of at least 99%, flash-cooling the thus-obtained reaction mixture and subjecting the obtained slurry containing terephthalic acid to solid-liquid separation, where the viscosity of the slurry containing terephthalic acid just after flash-cooling is continuously measured and the temperature of the reaction mixture just before the flash-cooling is controlled based on the degree of variation of the viscosity.
