Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide trunk piston marine engine lubrication for a medium-speed four-stroke compression-ignited (diesel) marine engine.SOLUTION: There is provided a trunk piston marine engine lubricating oil composition for improving asphaltene handling in use thereof, in operation of the trunk piston marine engine when fuelled by a heavy fuel oil. The composition comprises, or is made by admixing, an oil of lubricating viscosity and, in respective minor amounts of the following components: (A) an overbased metal hydrocarbyl-substituted hydroxybenzoate detergent system, and (B) a hydrocarbyl-substituted succinic acid anhydride, preferably made by halogen- or radical-assisted functionalization processes, where the ratio of succinic anhydride groups per substituted hydrocarbyl moiety is in the range of 1.4 to 4, preferably 1.4 to 3.SELECTED DRAWING: None
