To provide a marine propulsion system for a ship equipped with a gas turbine, configured to efficiently operate the gas turbine by combining a generator with a power storage device.
The marine propulsion system includes a propulsion motor M that drives a propeller 5 by power generated in a generator G to be driven by a gas turbine GT; a power storage device S for storing the generated power; and a control device CU for controlling equipment. The control device CU repeats the following cycle: operating the gas turbine GT always in a high output region to drive the generator G; supplying the generated power to an inboard power supply SP, the propulsion motor M, and the power storage device S; stopping the gas turbine GT when the power storage device S reaches a required maximum charge amount; supplying the stored power from the power storage device S to the inboard power supply and the propulsion motor M after stopping the gas turbine; and restoring a power generating condition for operating the gas turbine GT in the high output region to drive the generator G when the amount of power stored in the power storage device S reaches a predetermined minimum charge amount.
