A marine research ship 10 is equipped with a derrick 13 and a sheave box 14 on the upper deck 12 of a hull 11. In addition, the side 17 of the sheave box 13 opposite to the derrick 13 is provided with an opening 18 for passing cables 31 to 34 led from the first to the fourth winches 21 to 24, and a door for closing the opening 18 when the first to the fourth winches 21 to 24 are not used. In this case, the first to the fourth winches 21 to 24 are installed on the second deck 19 located below the upper deck 12. According to this construction, a work area for preparing measurement instruments, or attaching or detaching the instruments to and from cables can be obtained sufficiently and easily, and a checking period for maintenance can be extended.
