PURPOSE: To prevent degradation in rolling accuracy without generating a clearance between materials by stopping material charging before a fresh charging material contacts the charged material and changing over this state to the charging by a feed carriage, then starting rolling as it is.
CONSTITUTION: A charging pusher 13 pushes out the fresh charging material 6" by the instruction of a charging pusher controller 59 when the fresh charging material 6" is transferred in front of the pusher 13 and stops said material at some spacing provided between said material and the last charged material 6. The pusher 13 retreats upon ending of the material charging by the pusher 13 and in turn, the feed carriage 21 moves and a motor 24 is driven at low torque by the instruction of a controller 56 to rotate a feed screw 23 and to advance the carriage 21. The front end contacts the final end of the charged material 6 on progression of the fresh charging material 6". A load cell 51 detects the contact and the controller 56 applies a command to the motor 24 to execute rolling by changing over the driving of said motor to high-torque driving so that the carriage 21 feeds the whole of the materials 6, 6" in the rolling direction.
