To display an excellent image while reducing an erasure period without causing cross talk in the signal electrode direction by applying a pulsative voltage of a polarity opposite to the poiarity of a terminal end of a hold voltage for a hold period to a scan electrode in the erasure period succeeding to the hold period.
A scan electrode drive circuit 50 selects seven kinds of voltages VWP, VRP, VHP, VE, VHN, VRN, VWN from a power source circuit 30 based on one side DP signal, DR signal, SIO1 signal, ACK signal and SCC signal from a control circuit 20, and applies successively respective voltages answering to respective states of erase, selection, hold, recovery (refresh) to scan electrodes Y1-Yn, and switches a voltage polarity to positive or negative at every selection period for AC driving the scan electrodes Y1-Yn. That is, the scan electrode drive circuit 50 applies the pulsative voltage of the polarity opposite to the polarity of the terminal end of the hold voltage for its hold period in the erasure period succeeding to the hold period.
