PURPOSE: To eliminate an error caused by an end face absorption by irradiating an infrared optical crystal by a laser light, cooling both end faces of the crystal and keeping a temperature constant and measuring an absorption coefficient.
CONSTITUTION: An end face cooling holder 7 is attached to both ends of a columnar infrared optical crystal 5 which has been set to a holding base 9, and while allowing cooling water to flow, a laser light 6 of prescribed power is radiated, and an elongation in the diameter direction of the crystal 5 is measured by a length measuring machine 8. Subsequently, from this elongation, a thermal expansion coefficient and the diameter, a temperature rise of the crystal 5 in a part of the length measuring machine 8 is calculated, and a variation against time (t) is derived. From this result, a heating value Q applied to the crystal is derived. From this value Q, incident power of the laser light and the refractive index, an absorption coefficient is derived.
