PURPOSE: To evade errors in measurement due to the deformation of the slide surface of a guide rail by providing a couple of displacement detectors at an upper and a lower position between a couple of upper and lower work rolls, moving those displacement detectors i parallel to the axes of the rolls, and finding the profile of the rolls from the sum of the measured quantities of displacement of the upper and lower individual detectors.
CONSTITUTION: If the axis of the guide rail 6 slants upward or downward slightly to the axes of the upper and lower rolls 2 and 2', the total quantity of abrasion of the upper and lower rolls is found from an equation, where YUO and YU'O, and YLO and YL'O are read values of the nonrolling operation surfaces 2a and 2b' of the rolls 2 and 2' among the detected values of the upper and lower displacement detectors 3 and YUX and YLX are the quantities of abrasion of the upper and lower rolls 2 and 2'. The profiles of the work rolls 2 and 2' are therefore found from the half of the value of the equation with ease.
