To provide a rectilinear/rotary mechanism having simple and thin structure, and one mechanism for driving rectilinear and rotary movement, and a simple signal system.
A rack 27 and a rack 37 arranged in a symmetrical position are constituted so as to be driven rectilineary in a Y direction by the rotation of a ball screw 23 rotating together with a motor 21, and a pinion gear 39 is engaged between the racks 27 and 37. The constant velocity rotation in the same direction of the motor 21 and a motor 31 moves the racks 27 and 37 at the same speeds and in the same direction, and the gear 39 stops rotation to be driven rectilineary in a Y' direction. Changing the speeds of the motors 21 and 31 causes a speed difference between the racks 27 and 37 to rotates/ rectilineary moves the gear 39.
