To provide a medical device and a method capable of suppressing an increase in the temperature of a structure by an electrode performing cauterization and promoting cooling in a structurally stable manner.SOLUTION: A medical device 10 includes an expansion body 21 made of a wire material of shape memory metal, a long-sized shaft part 20 to which the base end of the expansion body 21 is fixed, and at least one electrode 22 provided along the expansion body 21. The expansion body 21 includes a concave part 51 recessed on the inside in a radial direction, and the concave part 51 includes a bottom part 56, a base end side erection part 52 extending from the base end of the bottom part 56 to the outside in the radial direction, and a tip side erection part 53 extending from the tip of the bottom part 56 to the outside in the radial direction. The electrode 22 is disposed along the base end side erection part 52. The concave part 51 includes an opposing surface part 62 including an opposing surface 63 that faces the electrode 22 when the expansion body 21 expands, in the tip side erection part 53. The opposing surface part 62 includes a blood exposure surface 65 exposed in blood, and the blood exposure surface 65 has an area larger than that of a conductive surface 80 that can come in contact with a biological tissue of the electrode 22.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
