This medium storage includes: a storing part for storing a medium; and a gate for separating the media stored in the storing part sheet by sheet. A thickness detecting part includes: a bent gate arm provided with a separating end for forming a separation gap of the gate at one end and a pressing part for pressing the medium at the other end; a support shaft rotatably supporting the bent part of the gate arm; and an abutting part having a reference surface to which the pressing part abuts, wherein the medium is held by the pressing part and the reference surface to detect the thickness of the medium. In this thickness detecting part, the travel of the pressing part in holding the medium to be stored in the storing part is amplified by the gate arm to form the separation gap of the gate.
