To prepare a melt-processed blend containing poly(vinyl alcohol) suitable for film, fibers, etc., which is reduced in heat decomposability, has a good toughness and is excellent in melt-processing property, and also can be produced at a low cost, by admixing a PVA polymer with a specific non- functional and non-reactive core/shell copolymer.
The objective melt-processed blend compositions comprise (A) a polymer containing 80 mole % or more of the unit having the formula and units of -CH2-CH2-, -CH2-CH(CH3)-, and the like, and, (B) a crosslinked core/shell modifier containing a rubbery, crosslinked core mainly of a unit derived from butadiene or an alkyl acrylate (B1), an intermediate shell mainly of units derived from styrene, and an outer shell mainly of units derived from methyl methacrylate (B2), or (C) a core/shell modifier comprising a non-crosslinked core/shell polymer containing a non-crosslinked core mainly of B1 and a shell mainly of B2. Further, the components B and C do not contain both a monomer unit capable of reacting with the OH groups of component A and a copolymerizable monomer unit having a cyclic amide group.
