To carry out the individual adjustment of the pressure in a melting chamber and a casting chamber and the pour of the molten metal from the melting chamber to the casting mold in the casting chamber without requiring a large elevating mechanism while effectively protecting a sluice valve from the molten metal.
In a melting and casting apparatus, the melting chamber 12 retaining a crucible 24 and the casting chamber 14 retaining a casting mold 32 for receiving the molten metal flowing from the crucible 24 are independently arranged. The sluice valve 62 and a sluice valve protecting member 66 are arranged between the melting chamber 12 and the casting chamber 14. The sluice valve protecting member 66 has a molten metal flowing passage 66a formed therein, and can be switched to the protective position for protecting the inside surface of the valve by entering the sluice valve 62 when the sluice valve 62 is in an open state and the sheltered position which can close the sluice valve by withdrawing the sluice valve protecting member 66 from the sluice valve 62.
