PURPOSE: To reduce the scatter of a harmful fluorine component and to produce glass under excellent productivity in case of melting and producing glass contg. a fluorine compd. by using a burner made of a specified metallic material and melting a raw material of glass by high-temp combustion flame due to fuel and gaseous oxygen in a melting furnace.
CONSTITUTION: In case of melting and refining a raw material of glass such a frit contg. an F compd., a raw material of glass contg. the F compd. is introduced in a furnace through an introduction port 2 by means of a batch changer 5 provided to the melting furnace 1. High-temp combustion flame at about 2,000°C is blown to the raw material of glass through a water-cooling oxygen burner 7 provided to the position opposite to this raw material to melt it and frit glass is refined and taken out as melted glass through a discharge port 4. In this case, since the oxygen burner is used, exhaust gas is reduced by N2 content in comparison with an air burner, and the blowing pressure is made small and therefore the amount of F compd. to be scattered to the outside of the furnace is reduced. Further corrosion and wear due to F are reduced by forming the drum part of the burner 7 facing the inside of the furnace by means of Cu, Ni, Mo, W and alloy thereof, and the furnace can be used for a long period and operating efficiency is enhanced.
