A movable wall 3 making the height of the furnace ceiling variable according to an advance of melting is provided in a furnace body 1. The movable wall 3 is moved vertically according to the state of the advance of melting of melting materials so that the effective capacity of a combustion chamber may not be enlarged. By keeping a space between the solid surface of the melting materials and the movable wall 3 to be prescribed practically without giving a large variation thereto, the average velocity of passing of high-temperature gas through an in-furnace section is maintained at least or increased as occasion demands and also geometric factors of the surface of the melting materials and a solid reflecting surface (furnace ceiling surface) are increased so that the heat of radiation reaching the melting materials be increased. Thereby lowering of a heating speed is prevented.
