To provide a method capable of bearing an aid for forming circulative society centering around recycling, reuse and reduction by adsorbing gaseous mercury by a mercury adsorbent easy to handle and reutilizable and desorbing it from the mercury adsorbent.
The special mercury adsorbent, which is prepared by adsorbing an acidic potassium permanganate solution by a porous material having a large specific area, water retention and air permeability such as pumice, a spongy resin, fibers cloth, etc., is provided. After gaseous mercury is adsorbed by the special mercury adsorbent, the special mercury adsorbent is immersed in water to desorb adsorbed mercury. The pumice, the spongy resin, the fibers, the cloth, etc. after the desorption of mercury are allowed to adsorb the acidic potassium permanganate solution again to be reutilized. The immersion water can be reutilized by removing mercury from immersion water using a hydroxylamine chloride solution, an iron powder, etc.
