PURPOSE: To enhance the preservation characteristic of a mercury battery by interposing a separating layer, which consists of three layers made of given materials, between the positive and the negative electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: A positive electrode 2 made of a mixture consisting of mercury oxide and graphite, a separating layer 7, and a negative electrode 4 made of an amalgamated zinc powder are placed in a positive can 1. The can 1 is sealed by use of a sealing plate 5, with a sealing ring 6 interposed between the can 1 and the plate 5, and the whole constitutes a mercury battery. The separating layer 7 consists of the following three layers: a nonwoven fabric 8 touching the negative electrode 4; an ion conductive resin film 10 which touches the positive electrode 2; a cellophane layer interposed between the fabric 8 and the resin film 10. The resin film 10 is prepared, for example, by applying a water-soluble high molecular matter such as polyvinyl alcohol in which nickel powder is dispersed on one of the surfaces considered both sides of the positive-electrode facing each other.
