NEW MATERIAL:Meta phenoxy benzoic acid derivatives of formula I: [X is nitro, cyano, trifluoromethyl, dialkylamino, alkylthio, alkoxysulfonyl group, etc.; Y is alkul, alkoxy, or halogen; m is an integer 0W3; n is an integer 1 or 2; r is NR1R2; formula II: (R1 is H, alkyl group, etc.; R2 is alyl, alkenyl, alkynyl group, etc.; l is 2, 4, 5, or 6)].

EXAMPLE: N-Ethyl-3-(4-nitrophenoxy)benzoic acid amide.

USE: Herbicides particularly effective for nice plant and barnyord grass. Safe to rice plant and durable remaining effects.

PROCESS: For example, meta-phenoxybenzoic acid or its reactive acid derivatives are reacted with a primary or secondary amine of formula HN(R1)R2 or cyclic secondary amine of formula IV to give the objective compounds of formula I.
