PURPOSE: To provide the new meta-substd. aromatic compds. having six- membered ring, which is capable of having a favorable effect on the optical switching angle and the critical pulse area by using them as the components of strong dielectric liq.-crystal mixtures.
CONSTITUTION: The compds. of the formula I {where R1 and R2 are each 1-22C alkyl, the group of the formula II-V [R3 to R6 are each H, 1-22C alkyl, or, when R3 and R4 are combined to dioxolane system, (CH2)4 or (CH2)5 are formed; M4 is CH2-O, O-CH2, single bond or the like], or the like; A1 to A3 are each 1,4-phenylene, pyradine-2,5-diyl, pyridazine-3,6-diyl, trans-1,4-cyclo hexylene, or the like, or A1 is the group of the formula VI; M1 to M3 are each O, S, CO, CO-O, CO-S, CH2CH2, CH=CH, C≡C, or the like; X1 to X4 are each CH, CF or N; (a) to (f) are each 0 or 1, although a+c+e=1 to 3}, for example 2-(3-methoxyphenyl)-5-(4-octyloxyphenyl)pyrimidine are provided.
