To improve durability of metal rings against abrasion while ensuring strength of metal elements supporting the metal rings of a belt-type continuously variable transmission.
Although a radial outside portion of a metal ring contact surface 36a of a neck section 36 of each metal element 32 which is contactably opposed to each side edge 33a of each metal ring 33 of a metal ring assembly 31 has a high frequency of contacting with each side edge 33a of each metal ring 33, it is possible to suppress abrasion of each side edge 33a of each metal ring 33 and to improve durability of each metal ring 33 by setting surface hardness of the radial outside portion lower than that of each metal ring 33. In addition, by setting surface hardness of the metal ring contact surface 36a at its portion of the radial outside lower than that of the metal ring contact surface 36a at other portions thereof where the frequency of contacting with each side edge 33a of each metal ring 33 becomes low, in comparison with a case of setting the surface hardness of the whole metal ring contact surface 36a low, it is possible to increase strength of each metal element 32 and to improve durability of each metal element 32.
