PURPOSE: To absorb and relax heat stress and to enhance durability, in a metal honeycomb member containing a flat strip material and a corrugated strip material made of a thin-walled metal as the min. constitutional unit, by providing microwaves of small corrugation to the vicinal region coming into contact with the inner wall surface of a metal casing of the corrugated strip material.

CONSTITUTION: A metal carrier MS used as an exhaust gas purifying means of a car is composed of a metal honeycomb member H and the metal casing C enclosing the same. The metal honeycomb member H is produced by bringing flat strip material 1 and corrugated strip material 2 made of a thin-walled metal into contact with each other to form a purifying element and winding the element around a fixing shaft. In this case, microwaves 22 of small corrugation whose wave height smaller than that of corrugations 21 of other region are formed to the vicinial region B coming into contact with the inner wall surface of the metal casing C of each corrugated strip material 2. By this constitution, the large deformation force based on the heat stress generated in the metal honeycomb member H of the vicinal region B can be absorbed and relaxed.
