To provide a new light emitting metal complex using as the central metal a metal M more abound in output and reserves than Ir and excellent in luminous efficiency, color purity and the like, and to provide a light emitting element using the complex.
The metal complex comprises a metal M selected from a group consisting of Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Y, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Pt, Au, Hg and the like and has no halogen unidentate ligand, wherein, at the highest occupied molecular orbit (HOMO) obtained by a computational scientific method, the rate of the sum of square of orbital coefficient of the outermost d orbital of M to the sum of squares of all atomic orbital coefficients is ≥ 1/3, the energy difference (S1-T1) between the lowest singlet excitation energy (S1) and the lowest triplet excitation energy (T1) is ≥0.1 (eV) but ≤1.0 (eV) and the oscillator strength (f) is ≥0.005 but ≤1.0.
