To provide a metal halide lamp capable of enlarging discharge arc, suppressing curvature in the tube wall direction of an arc tube, improving lamp efficiency, suppressing a lowering of a luminous flux maintenance factor even under long-term use and correcting the color tone of luminescent color.
An envelope is provided with an arc tube 3 formed of oxide- based translucent ceramic material, and a cerium halide, a sodium halide, a thallium halide and an indium halide are combined and filled as a luminescent material 17 in the arc tube 3. It is preferable to contain the cerium halide at 20 wt.% to 69.0 wt.%, the sodium halide at 30 wt.% to 79.0 wt.%, and the total quantity of the thallium halide and indium halide at 1.0 wt.% to 20 wt.% to the whole metal halide.
