PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a metal surface treating agent capable of improving the press molding workability of a metallic material and depositing a film excellent in moisture resistance and film peelability.
SOLUTION: This metal surface treating agent contains (A) a copolymer of (a) styrene with (b) a vinyl compound having carboxyl group copolymerizable with the styrene as essential monomers and (B) a lubricant. In the agent, the ratio of the component (a) to the component (b) in the (A) copolymer satisfies (a)/(b)=1/9 to 9/1 by mass, the ratio of (a)+(b) in the (A) copolymer is 30 to 100 mass %, and also, the ratio of (B) to (A)+(B) is 2 to 30 mass %. As the (B) lubricant, paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, polyethylene wax, polypropylene wax, or the like, are peferable, and, as the (A) copolymer, the one having a glass transition temperature of ≥75°C is preferable. The metal surface treating agent is applied and dried to deposit a film on the surface of a metallic material. The coating weight of the film after the drying is preferably controlled to 1 to 5 g/m2.
