PURPOSE: To improve the durability of a metallic support by using the ends of the sheets of a flat sheet-like strip having longer size than that of the sheets of a corrugated sheet-like strip as the parts abutted on the inner peripheral surface of a casing so as to abut the ends of the sheets of the flat strip on each other or allow them to overlap with each other in a metallic support having a stack which is formed by alternately stacking up sheets of the flat strip and sheets of the corrugated strip.
CONSTITUTION: Sheets of a flat sheet-like strip 1 and sheets of a corrugated sheet-like strip 2, both of which are made of thin metal sheets, are alternately stacked up to form a stack S1 having a desired number of stages and a desired number of stacks S1 thus formed are wound all together around a winding center to form a metallic honeycomb body H1 used for supporting an exhaust gas purification catalyst. Then, this metallic honeycomb body H1 is encased in a casing C made of a metal to manufacture the objective metallic support MS. At this time, each of the sheets of flat strip 1 of the stack S1 is formed so as to have length by (1) longer than that of the sheets of corrugated strip 2. Each of the ends of strip 1 is allowed to overlap with any one of its adjacent ends and in this state, abutted on the inner peripheral surface of the casing C. Thus, the fillet forming properties of the brazing filler metal and durability are enhanced.
