NEW MATERIAL:A compound of the formula (R is H, methyl; n is 1 to 10).
USE: It is useful as a material for coatings, paint, ink, adhesive and electronics.
PREPARATION: An adduct of 1 to 10 moles, preferably 1 to 5 moles of an alkylene oxide (e.g. ethylene oxide, propylene oxide) to 1 mole of cyanophenol is allowed to react with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid or their mixture to give a mixture of the formula. In the reaction, an acidic catalyst such as sulfuric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid is used and the formed water is removed by distillation using an azeotropic solvent such as n-hexane, benzene or toluene. The mixture of the formula has a low viscosity, essentially no smell, low stimulation index and good adhesion to a variety of base materials.
