PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a specified polyalkylene glycol-based compound, with formation of impurities suppressed.SOLUTION: A method of producing a compound of formula (2) includes a step of reacting a compound of formula (1) with a bisulfite compound and/or sulfite compound, and the combined content of sodium and potassium in the reaction mixture is 1.5 to 5 moles based on 1 mole of sulfur. In formulae (1) and (2), Ris a 2-20C alkylene group; Ris CHCHgroup, CHgroup or a single bond; Ris a hydrogen atom or CHgroup; and n is a number of 1 to 300.
