PURPOSE: To heighten the engine efficiency at the time of fuel excursions and improve the operability of a vehicle by reducing and increasing the spark advance instantaneously during a rich or lean fuel-air excursion, and reducing engine torque variation related to such alternate excursion.
CONSTITUTION: An engine 12 and a transmission 14 are connected to an electronic control module 16, and the engine operation control including torque variation control is executed according to the data of a sensor for measuring exhaust gas oxygen, engine speed, temperature and air flow. In a test sequence coming along with OBD-II regulation, many alternate forced fuel excursions are applied to the engine 12 to be loaded with air fuel ratios which alternately fluctuate between rich and lean. During rich air-fuel composition excursion, the spark advance is instantaneously reduced, and on the other hand, during lean air-fuel composition excursion, the spark advance is instantaneously increased. Thus, desired engine efficiency and operational easiness of vehicle can be obtained.
