Abstract:

PURPOSE: To give a method and an apparatus for suitably restraining and protecting an occupant in response to a magnitude and a direction of a vehicle crash in the case of the crush.

CONSTITUTION: The apparatus for controlling an occupant restraint system comprises a first crash sensor 40 having a sensitivity axis parallel with a front- to-rear axis 22 of the vehicle, a second crash sensor 42 having a similar relation to a side-to-side axis 24, a controller receiving signals from the two sensors to operate occupant restraint devices 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 72, 74, 76, 78, 82, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88 responsive to a direction and a magnitude of the crash. As the signals of the sensors, not a crash deceleration vector but a crash speed vector obtained by time-integrating the deceleration vector is used.
