To provide a method for simply decomposing an organic compound, a surplus sludge, etc., even under the environment in which no utility is installed while controlling energy consumption.
The method for decomposing an organic compound, with which an organic compound is decomposed in a heated aqueous solution containing at least one metal compound (alkali compound) selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal compound and an alkaline earth metal compound, comprises a process for adding an alkali compound to water which may contain an alkali compound and/or an organic compound to give the heated aqueous solution. After a photodecomposition process with which a gas to be treated containing an organochlorine compound and a gas for promoting the decomposition of the organochlorine compound is irradiated with a light so that the organochlorine compound is decomposed to give a gas containing a decomposition product and a chlorine gas is carried out, the method for decomposing the organic compound is performed.
