To provide an apparatus and a method for determining optical characteristics of particles in highly concentrated systems (i.e. suspension liquid and dispersion liquid, hereinafter referred to as a "sample"), such as solid-particle slurry and liquid-in-liquid (e.g. oil-in-water) emulsions which do not require dilution of the sample.
Reduction of optical transparency of a sample is required to avoid influence of multiple light scattering. The reduction of the transparency is achieved by forming the sample as a sheet flow with controlled thickness. The transparency of the sample is measured by using a light absorption method. Thickness of the sample in an optical cell 102 is controlled in order to keep the transparency of the sample within a range of a predetermined value.
