To solve a problem that a metric for speedily obtaining a reliable evaluation is required in order to make increment a long-term average data transmission rate in a communication system wherein a channel impulse response is temporally fluctuated.
A variable gain module applies a variable gain to a received packet, and a baseband processor receives a sample signal of fixed energy. The baseband processor measures the power of a received signal to derive variable gain control setting inversely proportional to the power of the signal (1). While the baseband processor processes an assumption in the packet, in order to hold a baseband signal of fixed energy, the baseband processor transmits variable gain control setting to the variable gain module (2). The gain evaluation of each subchannel is calculated to calculate noise plus the interference power of each subchannel (3), thereby generating the channel quality metric equivalent with the normalized geometric average of squared magnitudes of the gain evaluation divided with total noise plus the interference power (4).
