To provide a method of reducing required data to limit the requirements in terms of external memory and bandwidth.
In a method and device for generating subfield codes for a picture displayed on a display device like a plasma display panel (PDP) or a plasma display device, a gray level of pixels of the picture displayed by the display device is obtained by modulating the number of light pulses per frame, namely, the number of sustain pulses, and the number of sustain pulses per subfield of a frame is varied by a power average level of the picture to be displayed. Video levels of the picture are first transcorded into luminance codes and are next encoded to subfield codes. In order to reduce a memory capacity required for implementing this transcording, luminance codes are not stored but offset values between luminance codes are stored in a lookup table. Luminance codes are reproduced by a controller of the display device.
