To speedily measure the size of warpage of rods (linear bodies having a circular cross section or a rod-like bodies).
A rod to be inspected is rotated and dropped onto a rolling table, and light shielded by the rod during rotation and drop is detected as primary image signals by a line sensor. The amount of positional fluctuation of the rod, during its rotation and drop, is determined on the basis of secondary image signals acquired on the basis of the primary image signals. On the basis of the amount of positional fluctuation, the size of camber of the rod is determined. The amount of positional fluctuation is computed, by determining the location of the center of gravity of the rod during its rotation and drop on the basis of the secondary image signals, the modified location of the center of gravity during its rotation and drop, on the basis of the difference between the location of the center of gravity and the average value of movements of the location of the center of gravity, and the maximum amplitude of the modified location of the center of gravity. Light-shielding signals are detected in the vicinity of the tip of the rod to be inspected which is rotating and being dropped.
