Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for making acetic acid in which acetic acid content of a product stream is increased, while water content is reduced.SOLUTION: The method includes condensing overhead vapor 26 from a light ends column 16 and decanting the condensed vapor to a light phase and a heavy phase. The heavy phase is mainly composed of methyl iodide, and at least a portion of the decanted heavy phase is refluxed to the light ends column 16. Acetic acid content of overhead stream of the light ends column 16, and water content of product stream (side stream) 40 of the light ends column 16 are both decreased, improving purification efficiency.
